Taslima Nasreen

Por Mathieu Mercier

This Bangladeshi writer / poet became famous in France for her struggle with women rights in her country, Bangladesh.

After having listened one of her interviews on a French radio called France Inter (some years ago), I was really amazed by this woman, with her strong words, her lucidity... Therefore, I really wanted to read her writings.

Chronologically, I have read:

- « Women », her collection of poetry "WOMEN" (love and fighting women);

- « Lajja » (« shame », this novel was forbidden in Bangladesh because of its contents);

- Several short stories;

- « Childhood » - first part of her autobiography (it’s my favourite book!);

- "Wild wind", second part of her autobiography;

-  "Rumeurs de haine", third part of her autobiography (Excellent! Strong emotions in it ! Taslima Nasreen knows a lot how to retranscribe emotions and facts);

- "French lover", a novel (I was obliged to read it in English because the French version was not made);

- "From my jail” (her last book).

Besides her courage, what else should I think and tell about her talent?

Taslima Nasreen/Nasrin is often criticized by Bengalis journalists that don’t consider her a good writer. Some (gossipers?) say that she is as brave as Salman Rushdie (I have not read any of his books yet), but without his talent.

After having read her books, I don’t understand how people can catalogue her as a bad writer, the only possible reason for me is that she doesn’t sell any books. Is it a good reason?

In my mind, Taslima Nasreen is a brave woman and a great writer too. Her problem is that she must face the worldwide chauvinist male system.

Taslima Nasreen is, for me, an avant-garde woman.

Don’t give up writing, Taslima! Go on! Someday, you will be recognized as a great writer!

I've never read her books, besides, I've never heard something about her. But after this post, certainly I will.

I agree with you. It's difficult, for a woman, to face a male chauvinist world. And this is more common every day.
